Eye Exam Q&A

What is an eye exam?

An eye exam is a preventive evaluation to assess the health of your eyes and the strength of your vision. Much like a physical exam with your primary care physician, an eye exam with a professional ophthalmologist helps detect early signs of disease and degeneration.

By visiting Emerald Eye Center Inc. for routine eye exams, you can minimize your risk of advanced eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts, which are often treatable in their early stages.

What happens during an eye exam?

If you’re visiting Emerald Eye Center Inc. for an eye exam for the first time, Dr. Tilki will review your medical history and ask you a series of questions, such as:

  • Do you wear glasses or contacts?
  • Are you currently experiencing vision problems?
  • Have you experienced vision problems in the past?
  • Do you take any medication?
  • Do you have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure?
  • Have you ever undergone eye surgery before?

These questions give Dr. Tilki a clearer idea of your eye health and can help her determine why you might be experiencing vision problems.

Next, Dr. Tilki performs the exam portion of your visit in three steps:

Visual acuity measurement

During a visual acuity test, you read a series of letters on a standardized chart to see whether you might benefit from glasses or contacts.

Eye pressure measurement

Before performing a full examination of the eyes, Dr. Tilki applies numbing eye drops to keep you comfortable while she evaluates your eyes.

Eye health assessment

Once your eyes are numb, Dr. Tilki uses lights and imaging devices to assess the health of the outside and inside of your eyes.

There are also other eye tests that Dr. Tilki may perform, such as a retinal exam or a color vision test, depending on your age and eye health.

How often do I need an eye exam?

How often you need an eye exam depends entirely on your age and medical history. While most individuals between ages 20-39 need an eye exam about once every five years, individuals with diabetic retinopathy should visit for an assessment once a year.

The older you get, the more important it is to visit Emerald Eye Center Inc. for routine eye exams. In general, individuals aged 40-54 should have an eye exam once every two to four years, while those over the age of 54 may consider visiting every one to three years.
